'Tongue Tangled Hair' by Bleeding Heart Narrative // TTRCD005

Perhaps the definitive Bleeding Heart Narrative record, Tongue Tangled Hair is a showcase of just how diverse and experimental pop music can be, when in the right hands. Unafraid to push the vocal delivery to the fore, yet never too far away from an unexpected change of pace or style, the twelve tracks display a maturity and clear development from All That Was Missing We Never Had In The World.

Their approach continues to show a fascination with sounds and textures, and a willingness to experiment with a wide array of instrumentation. Organ, 12-string guitar, electronics, cello and piano all play a part, yet the album never loses a sense of coherence and is always unmistakenly the sound of Bleeding Heart Narrative. Looping vocal delivery characterises the early standout Henry Box Brown, rhythms piling on rhythms as clattering percussive sounds take over and submerge the layered voices. A distorted electronic sample is pushed to the fore on Colours Turn Colours - surely a pop-hit in an alternative universe - and the album strides through various sounds and styles before the plaintive closer 10 Tunbokilot, a sparse and shimmering piano composition.

The first (sold-out) pressing of the album featured sewn sleeves, hand-numbered, and an extra two-colour foldout screenprint enclosed. All versions feature a two-colour detailed artwork sleeve and monochrome six-panel foldout.
